Each online event starts with a short introduction to a panel of 4 authors. The audience is then divided into 4 breakout rooms where they remain for the rest of the program while the authors visit each room in turn. Everyone’s video is turned on and their mics are unmuted, allowing for informal, face-to-face discussion. What’s more, breakout sessions are never recorded. What’s said in The Back Room stays in The Back Room!
Registration is free, but space is limited, so sign up, sit back, take a sip, and enjoy the conversation!
WANT MORE DETAILS? Here’s everything you need to know about Back Room events.
The program will begin promptly at the designated time. Please arrive 10 minutes early—Zoom can be fickle at times, and we don’t want you to miss a thing! If you have problems logging in, just text our tech guru, Tom, for assistance at (978) 219-4039.
Five minutes before the hour, the doors to the main room will open. You can join with your mics and video on so you can say hello to one another and to the featured authors. Chat is also turned on.
Attendees’ mics are muted as the program begins and the host and authors are spotlighted. After a brief welcome and a quick, round-robin “Ask the Authors” session, attendees are divided into 4 breakout rooms, with one author assigned to each room.
Being assigned to a breakout room happens automatically, so you don’t have to do anything except click the “join breakout room” invitation that appears on your screen. Depending on your individual settings, you might have to unmute yourself and turn on your own video feed.
For the rest of the program, you simply remain in your breakout room while the authors rotate through each room in turn. You’ll get fifteen minutes with each author to chat about whatever you like. Our authors are as eager to talk with you as you are with them, so don’t by shy! Since the authors will be able to see you, you can physically raise your hand if you have a question or a comment. You can also use the “raise hand” feature at the bottom of your screen.
Keep in mind that with everyone’s mics open, a certain amount of talking over one another is inevitable. It’s also part of the fun, like a virtual cocktail party! At the same time, if you’re not speaking, please keep background noise to a minimum. You can also turn your mic off.
Once all four authors have visited each breakout room, they’ll say goodbye, and the event will be over. Yes, Zoom is weird, and ends without any fanfare, but please know that we’re very glad you willing to give our new format a try, and we hope you have a wonderful time!
